Types of Hernias
UFirst Health specializes in no mesh hernia repair.
Inguinal
An inguinal hernia or groin hernia is a hernia of abdominal cavity contents through the inguinal canal. Symptoms, which may include pain or discomfort, especially with or following coughing, exercise, or bowel movements, are absent in about a third of patients.
Umbilical
An umbilical hernia is a bulge near the belly button, or navel. Intestines or other tissues may bulge through an opening or a weak spot in the stomach muscles. The hernia has a sac that may hold some intestine, fat, or fluid. Many umbilical hernias are caused by pressure near the belly button. Pressure may come from increased weight, repeated straining, or pregnancy.
Incisional
An incisional hernia is a problem that occurs when a bulge of tissue pushes through the wall of muscle that’s holding it in. It happens after surgery in the belly, in the area of the incision. It can happen months or even years after surgery.
Femoral
A femoral hernia is a problem that occurs when tissue in the abdomen bulges through a weak part in the lower belly into the upper thigh, just below the groin crease. This occurs more often in women than in men.
Ventral
A hernia that occurs along the abdominal wall above the groin area is called a ventral hernia. While they frequently emerge where connective tissues hold your muscles together along the vertical midline of the abdomen, they can appear anywhere on the abdomen.
Epigastric
An epigastric hernia is a type of hernia that causes fat to push through a weakened area in the walls of the abdomen. It may develop in the epigastrium. Epigastric hernias are more common in adults and usually appear above the umbilical region of the abdomen.
Abdominal
There are several different types of abdominal hernias. These hernias develop above your groin and below your ribcage. Again, we differentiate these hernias based on their location.
Lateral
Patients undergoing orthopedic or spinal surgery, especially through an abdominal approach, have an increased risk of nerve injury and herniation to the abdominal wall musculature. When this occurs, it is called a lateral hernia.

I flew in from Houston Texas for Dr. Tomas to do a repair of my completely blown out belly button. I was an iron worker for 20 years and many of my employees had mesh hernia repair done with little to no luck. The minute I met Dr. Tomas and his staff I knew this was the right place to get the repair I needed. The staff was great and made me feel at ease. Dr. Tomas made this a relatively pain free ordeal. The man is a true artist of his trade. My wife and I are in awe at how nice my stomachs looks. Dr. Tomas has nurses available for your care if you travel alone. My caregiver Rosette was the best I have ever had. She provided the next level care that is hard to find. Thank you to Dr. Tomas and his entire team. God bless!
I’d like to express my gratitude for the care everyone at the clinic showed before and during my umbilical hernia surgery. They were extremely professional! I’d been planning the surgery for a few years and was afraid to do so. Alina Tomas was always very attentive to me throughout the entire process! I highly recommend the clinic! Dr. Robert Tomas, who performed my surgery, is an excellent surgeon!
Thank you all!
Umbilical hernia repair:
I’m pretty impressed. The whole experience of the actual surgery was very luxurious. I felt no pain. Staff were so professional, facilities clean. Regarding after care and post-op follow up, Dr. Tomas is on it. Even with a small complication after the surgery, he’s had me come in, treated me, and provided excellent patient care. I’m local so I hope to be back for other procedures in the future!
